We took a night train to venture into our next destination.....Salzburg (Austria)...You must be wondering why we are back into Austria again....As we started off in Vienna ( in the middle of the countries which I wanted to visit), that's why I had to do a horseshoe pattern!! The train ride wans't cheap either....When the credit card bill came up, it's almost RM400 per person...for like 6 hrs ride....so far that's the most expensive international train ride I had...
I'd heard a lot about Salzburg...saying that it's a very nice city....I guess if you actually follow the tours it would be better....cos the trips look very interesting!! Salzburg Sightseeing Tours is actually the major tour company which arranges the tour in Salzburg. But as we were short of time, we didn't follow any of the tours...
Here are some reasons why you should visit Salzburg :-
1) It's listed as UNESCO world heritage site in 1997
2) It's the birthplace of famous musician Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
3) And part of the settings for the famous musical and film "The Sound of Music" - The movie was based on the true story of Maria von Trapp, a Salzburg-based nun who took up with an aristocratic family and fled German occupation. Although the film is not particularly popular among Austrians, the town draws many visitors who wish to visit the filming locations, alone or on tours.
So am I convincing enuf????....ahahhaa....
The city is rather small.....if you are coming from the train station, it's better to take a bus than to walk to the city....It should take a good 20 minutes walk...and budget accomodation is scarce...or should I say there are less than 3. We stayed in Youth & Family Guesthouses. There's breakfast, this breakfast is really a BUFFET style compared to the rest which offers you on an ala-carte basis. The beds are rather old and it's very much a hostel style, though not the best, but ok. But as this guesthouse is near the town, I chose this one.

Approximately 10 minutes walk from the hostel is St Peter's Cemetery and Catacombs, the oldest Christian graveyard, famous because many of the most important families of Salzburg have been buried there. Picture below is the sister of Mozart, Nannerl Mozart, a musician herself and to the right is famous musician Joseph Haydn's brother, Johann Michael Haydn. It is apparently a misbelieve that the Von Trapp family hid out here in The Sound of Music. It is said that the scene was shot at California.
