21 / 03/ 2007 ( Part 1 ) - Abu Simble

Like the normal tours, our private tour also left Aswan for Abu Simble at 3am....Gosh...Besides going to work, I'd never woken up at 3am to go for sightseeing!! We slept throughout the 3hours, waking up occassionaly only to see pitch black outside the window. At 7.45am we were woken up by our driver telling us we have reached.

Here we are - Abu Simble (right after the entrance - approaching the Lake Nasser) Entrance Fee -EP36

Ok....it's education time now.....aheeemmm... let's see the history behind this amazing temple ok???

It's carved out of the mountain on the west bank of Nile between 1274 and 1244BC.

  • The temple's dedicated to gods Harakhty, Amun and Ptah and to the deified pharaoh himself
  • Nile and desert sand shifted until the temple was lost to human memory. Rediscovered by chance in 1813 - only one heads was completely showing off above the sand, the next head broken off, the remaining 2 only crowns could be seen
  • 30m high and 35m wide
  • 4 statues are RamsesII
  • The smaller statues are pharaoh's mom Queen Tuya, his wife Nefetari and some of their children

As no photography is allowed inside, just took my best shots from outside :-

Another temple in Abu Simbel is Temple of Hathor, dedicatd to Queen Nefertari, Ramses' beloved wife.
